  • From Helpful to Worthless

This app went from super helpful to absolutely worthless in one update. The previous version was very intuitive. Living abroad in China I was able to quickly switch back and forth between translating messages from Chinese and translating messages into Chinese. With this clunky update, by the time I’m finished trying to switch back and forth, it’s taken me ten times as long, frustrating both me and the person I’m trying to converse with. I tried to give it some time to see if it became more intuitive to me, but no such luck. This app is just awful now.

Formerly this app was fundamental to my life living in a foreign country. After the most recent update the app is utterly useless for daily life. Find another solution for your translation needs.
  • Much Improved

Update: I’m deducting two stars from my original review. One because the seemingly never ending list of prior translations is annoying and very difficult to remove (each one has to be deleted individually taking 3 steps for each deletion). If you forget to change the language before translation or make a typo, that bad translation is saved in a list. Should be able to turn off saving prior translations or at least easily delete them. Or better yet, don’t save at all unless you choose to save a translation. Deducting another star because the app doesn’t “remember” which of the two selected languages you last translated. Always seems to revert back to assume I’m translating English to another language. I often translate the foreign language into English. Still a very good app, but needs some attention to make it easier to use. Original —————— The newest update (version 23) is a huge improvement in the UI. Finally landscape orientation on iPad! But much more than that. The ‘as you type translation’ has been replaced with a single translation when you’ve completed the sentence. Since words can have different meaning depending on context, the old approach invariably was initially wrong and would change as you typed. Also, switching between the two select languages is very easy and doesn’t reset back to home screen. Lastly, the audio translation seems to have been slowed down somewhat from almost inhumanly fast to a more moderate and natural speed. I liked the old version ability to have the translation read at three sequentially different speeds. But, I think I mostly used that because the initial speed was too fast. All in all a really great update for an excellent translation application.

Just installed latest version, there seems to be no way to do safari web translations anymore? Pretty much making this app useless. What a shame.

The updated version is not as user friendly. My teachers are moving to google translate. Also, the pictures are not translating well, sometimes it changes the language on its own.

Microsoft used to include an excellent Apple Watch app to Translate now it looks like they’ve eliminated it that’s really disappointing
