I just clicked on the 2-week free trial ad, and the app lead me through a 5-step process. Thinking I wouldn’t be charged till after the two weeks, I continued. BEWARE! They may charge you for the full year and they they will claim that they can’t refund you because Apple handles the payments. I was told to change my subscription through Apple App Store. That only allows me to cancel renewal in 2022. SCAM SCAM SCAM

  • Recommend but be prepared to be regularly frustrated by it

    By IcedCovfefe
I’d say this app should only be used as a supplementary part of language studies. It’s great for building vocabulary and general practice, and the fact that it’s free is fantastic I like the concept of the rewards system and having friends on, because seeing others’ progress and the weekly competitions and monthly challenges actually do help encourage me to keep going. But if you want to learn a language from scratch, this is not the app to learn it. Grammar education is lacking in explanation or is often unclear and it really forces you to have to figure out a lot of the rules yourself; when it comes to that, you’re better off learning these things from other resources. Sometimes the app will ask you questions about things it hasn’t even taught you yet. It’s clear that the translations were made by people who do not have a total mastery of English, because the translations can be extremely awkward and sometimes impossible to figure out based on the word blocks they give you. Oftentimes it will mark perfectly grammatically correct and accurate sentences as incorrect (fortunately you can report this if it happens, and if enough people report it, it may be fixed). And when you have a heart taken off for each mistake, this becomes extremely frustrating as it significantly slows your progress. Additionally, there are a lot of bugs. This app has essentially stolen/wasted so many of my gems from these bugs, or taken a huge amount of time off my times challenges bc it freezes which would cause me to lose challenges I otherwise would have won bc the time runs out (and again, waste my gems). And even though I love the free access to the app, with each new update, it seems to me that they are intentionally designing the app to encourage people to spend as much money as possible. With each new update, they allow you to earn less and less gems, and accumulating enough gems just to use them for anything takes an obscenely ridiculous amount of time (I would have to use this app for several hours a day every day and stay on top of earning the 10 free gems per hour just to have enough to use). It’s so frustrating and slows down my progress even further. For example, I miss having the 30-min xp boost for just 30 gems; after an update, the cost jumped up more than 3x the original cost for some reason. I also don’t understand why Plus is so expensive. I would love to pay for a monthly Plus subscription, but it’s absolutely not worth paying $13 a month for it. I’d be much more willing to pay if it was at max $8 a month, so I feel like they’re just hindering their own chances to profit further with that. I’d say saving a few bucks per month by buying the annual subscription is worth it even less from how costly the one-time payment is. But honestly, between the sheer number of global users they have and the constant advertisements, I’m having trouble believing that they’re lacking the needed funds to keep the app running — I cant help but think theyre just getting greedy at this point. One final thing: I really don’t understand why Tagalog isn’t a language option when people have been asking for it for years. They have multiple fake fantasy/sci-fi languages included, like Klingon and Valyrian, not to mention dead or rarely used languages like Latin and Welsh, but the official language of a country with a population of almost 110 million people and the second largest Asian American demographic in the US somehow isn’t doable? Considering how much the Philippines have contributed to the world, you’d think it would’ve been an option by now. It’s so difficult to find any decent language learning options for Tagalog as it is. To conclude, I’d still recommend this app but it needs a lot of work.

  • Too many bugs associated with getting gems

    By Ree Ree 927890
I like Duolingo but I encounter bugs on a regular basis while using it on my iPhone. My gems are sometimes not updated after I achieve my goal for the day. The app crashes often after using “Free Chest” and I have to delete and then reload it to get gems. I sometimes wonder if this is intentional to get you to purchase Duolingo Plus. If so, it’s not working. It has the opposite effect.
