Why does this app need access to my contacts, when if they’re not linked to me?

I wish I had a redundant device loaded with the same apps where I can experiment/roll the dice with (supposedly tested)updates on one of them. But I’m not some multimillion dollar software developer so I’m stuck with this broke down app on one device. The latest update crashes, it loads, flashes a couple times then disappears...The Great Fingini!
