    Love that the app is regularly updated, information is kept fresh, and reviews are so relevant. The live beach conditions are a great addition. Well worth it, although I’d still recommend the books to read ahead of time. Use the app when on island.

    This is a fantastic app, especially if you are new to Hawaii. My wife and I decided to go to Maui for the first time for our 50th anniversary. We started with their book and loved it so much, we moved on to this app. It is a terrific base to start from. You learn all you need to know and can you use what you find to narrow down any other search you feel you might need. Even with the searched I did do, I found my self coming back to this time after time. Told with a touch of humor, it makes learning fun. They only problem I had was narrowing down all I wanted to to do in the time we had. If you think you know everything, then this is not the book for you. If you want help for your trip then you have to get this book

    I’m a bit disappointed by the app. I have purchased the books for the big island, Maui (2nd purchase) and kauai. Every time I tried to use the app, I found it easier to pull over and open the book. I didn’t find it super user friendly (on the go), and although I know all the info that’s in the book is on the app, it’s just not as easy as cracking the book looking at the island and seeing what’s near.

    The “blue book” for Kauai is unquestionably THE resource for travelers. Some suggestions to improve: 1) When you are in the “map” and you see a beach, you should be able to touch that name and be taken to the full description of that beach. Not have to go back to home and go to the list of beaches. 2) For restaurants, the above is especially true! 3) This app needs a much better search. There are open source cognitive search algorithms which would make finding things like “Na Pali coast trail” and give the right result. With all the above in mind, this is still a must have app. Having integration with GPS when you’re on a trail is invaluable.

    Summary: I should’ve just purchased the print or the app, not both. Learn from my mistake. Further explanation: The following is directly copied and pasted from my kindle version, which is the most recent edition: “For instance, you want to go to Tunnels Beach to snorkel today? You can flip to the page in the book and read all about it. But with our app, you tap to the entry and you can read all about it and find out that today isn’t a good day to get into the water due to high surf. Want to do a hike on the North Shore? Well, the author woke up this morning, saw that the weather was going to be bad on the on that side, circled a part of the map that he thought might be affected and for how long, and every entry in that area that is weather-sensitive will be updated to reflect the bad weather.“ I paid $17.99 for these live weather updates in the app version. I spent some time looking at he beaches from the home page and then going through the map feature which takes you to the same thing. There are no updates on current weather. Either this was falsely advertised in the kindle/print version or it’s hidden in an area of the app that even a Gen Z, who is well accustomed to apps, cannot find.

    Spent nearly a month on the big island. This app was a must have and next time I’ll leave my hard copy of the book by same name, at home. One bug, when I attempt to map directly from ap map to location I have chosen to drive to, I can see myself moving along the route, but would like to hear directions aloud while driving.
