  • They forced upgrades on old users

I’ve had an account with chefling forever. Like probably since they began on apple. I’ve accumulated hundreds of recipes in my personal box, and recommended countless friends to the app, just to be thanked by losing access to continue adding recipes, unless I pay for a subscription of $5 a month. I guess this is how you appreciate your users. I’d rather deal with ads or pay a one time app fee; but then again I just see greediness in terms of developers when they want your money monthly.
  • It’s alright

I’ve used this app for a bit over a year. The UI design is a bit clunky for me, and suddenly I have to pay for a subscription to add recipes from urls. A few features that would improve this app for me (and maybe make it worth paying for?): 1. Sort grocery list by recipe - BigOven had a decent feature for this for free 2. Easier editing of online sourced recipes - if I could edit steps or add ingredients that would be super cool. Currently you can add notes, but that doesn’t leverage the functionality of adding recipes to the grocery list if I want more carrots in something. I have yet to see this implemented at all in a recipe app. 3. A way to view the whole ingredient name without ellipses 4. Web UI - I’d love a way to add recipes on my desktop as well 5. Search/filter within my saved recipes - such a pain to scroll to find my own recipes This app was promising to me because the pantry feature seemed useful. Honestly, I find it only somewhat useful. Maybe because it’s a pain to account for using stuff spontaneously. I don’t have any suggestions here, maybe the feature isn’t for me.
  • Decent app

This app has most of the desired features to be able to manage the food resources. The issue I have is that it is not easy to use when you prepare a snack and use a resource, to remove it from the list is cumbersome, and it has location of resource and expiration date types, they could be tied based on location. The reason I am changing the app is because after I finished configuring and adding all my inventory, the app doesn’t open anymore, it stays stuck on splash screen, or when it completed the splash screen, it crashes. Hopefully it will be updated and I can update to 5 stars

If you’re looking to save money this app is for you. It has all the qualities of a recipe app but it also has a way to save what you already have in your pantry so no food is wasted. I absolutely live that I can out in chicken breasts with the expiration date and Chefling will remind me to use it before it expires. And because I’ve logged all my pantry items as well as things purchased I can rest assured knowing I can use it and not be forgotten. Nothing is going it’s than forgetting you have an expensive ingredient and it expired. You can save recipes of your own or search for some new ones. Let’s talk about planning. I set a day of the week I plan out my menu and it will remind me with a notification that today is meal planning day. Then while I search recipes it’ll populate a shopping list that I can then save and order groceries from. Then once they’ve been ordered it’ll automatically add it to my pantry with usual expiration dates. Of course you can modify those. You can also set a day that you’re planning in making the item. And if you have an echo show, it’ll show the recipes and steps. In short, I’ve found that several weeks I didn’t have to do full in weekly shopping because I had enough already in my pantry and freezer. I’ve saved hundreds of dollars in grocery bills. Plus, this app is free.
